Swim Team Overview
Since its inception in 1971, the Walden Glen Wahoos Swim Team has been a strong and active team known for its determination and spirit. Team members must be family members of Walden Glen Pool in good standing. Below, you will find information about the three levels of team involvement. For swimmers who aren’t yet ready for one of the below options, our swim team coaches and older swimmers can be hired for private lessons. Arrangements for private swim lessons are between these instructors and the families hiring them (updated list of instructors).
COMPETITIVE SWIM TEAM
Requirements for this level| Swimmers 8 & under | complete a minimum of 25 meters freestyle and 25 meters backstroke | Must possess a general understanding of either breaststroke or butterfly |
| Swimmers 9-18 | complete a minimum of 50 meters freestyle and 50 meters backstroke | Must possess a general understanding of breaststroke and butterfly |
Competitive team practices start in the afternoons on the Tuesday after Memorial Day. Practices include a dryland workout prior to a 60-minute water workout. Practices focus on developing stroke techniques, starts, and turns in a positive and encouraging team environment. For more information, see the practice tab on Swimtopia.
Under NVSL rules, a swimmer will compete the entire summer at his or her league age, the age of the swimmer on June 1. This rule means that any swimmer who has a birthday after June 1 will compete as the younger age for the entire season. The swimmer’s league age is also used to determine eligibility for age-specific social events for our team.
The coaching staff selects swimmers from the competitive group to swim in Saturday morning dual meets (“A meets”). These swimmers also have the opportunity to compete in the Monday evening developmental meets (“B meets”). Competing in meets is highly encouraged but not required.
MINI WAHOOS
This level is for 8-under swimmers who can complete 25 meters without stopping in a manner that resembles freestyle and with their faces in the water. These swimmers will practice daily and have the opportunity to compete in the Monday evening meets when the coaching staff feels they are properly prepared. Some Mini Wahoos may also be selected for Saturday meets.
Mini Wahoo practices start in the afternoons on the Tuesday after Memorial Day. Mini Wahoos practice Monday through Friday for 45 minutes per practice and are invited to attend all team functions including the Lollipop Meet.
SWIMMER EVALUATIONS
If you are unsure about your child’s placement, please ask a team Rep for an evaluation, which will ensure that all athletes are placed in the appropriate group based on their skill level. The coaching staff will complete the in-water evaluation, and parents must stay on deck during this time. Details regarding when evaluations will take place will be available after the pool opens. Contact the Swim Team Reps for any questions or concerns about the swim team levels or evaluations.
